Anisos Vallagarina Eugenio Rosi, biodynamic, natural wine, Nosiola blend, rich, layered, fresh, lovely. To make his white wine, he continues to go his own way and blends 3 local varieties together to produce great harmony. It is made from Nosiola grown at 400 m, Pinot Bianco at 550 m and Chardonnay at 750m. High altitudes which yield high acidity. Employing biodynamic principles Eugenio lets the wine make itself and adds only the tiniest amount of sulphur having not fined or filtered the wine. Anisos is minerally white with layers of complexity, savoury notes and mature stone fruits. This is a hand crafted white wine with immense personality. I once drank several glasses at the fantastic 'Antica Bottega del Vino' in the centre of Verona late into the evening and the lasting memory is a wine which although rich, complex and fascinating has an amiable drinkability which makes it so easy and so moreish. Anisos generally has only 12 or 12.5% alcohol (so a great glass for lunch time) yet the body to stand up to some seriously hearty Trentino dishes like Canederli or Pizzoccheri. It does come out a little cloudy, don't be put off, it is a sign you are drinking something natural! Absolutely lovely white wine.

Eugenio Rosi really is one of the great's of artisan wine making, he thinks outside the box, goes his own way and defies convention, not least with his 'Jesus Christ' like appearance. He is one of the key figures in the 'Dolomitici organisation which promotes artisan and natural production in the Trentino. He is also the first inspirational artisan wine maker i ever met over a memorable dinner at 'Due Veneti' in Marylebone. We had several bottles of his beautiful Marzemino and Eugenio was disarmingly chatty and humble. Poiema is named after his daughter who was very ill at birth and nearly died. Now a healthy little girl, she helps Eugenio stick the labels on his bottles. Eugenio is also an integral part of the 'Dolomitici' organisation which is a group of thirteen artisan wine producers from the Trentino who have come togther to promote natural, sustainable wine production in their region. The wines of Eugenio typify the Trentino but also the natural style of the artisan and to a certain extent the purity of imperfection. Wines like his are not the same very year, they taste different every time you open them and in what context. Natural wine is alive and non more so than the delicious bottles produced in tiny quantity by this natural wine guru. Cin Cin Eugenio, hope to see you again soon over a few glasses.
