Barbera d'Asti Ciapin Andrea Scovero, Natural wine, Piemonte, classic flavours, natural freshness. Barbera is a grape which always gives high acidity and low tannin. Often the wine's acidity is tempered by new oak barrels. In this case, tiny producer Andrea Scovero uses only stainless steel for his Barbera. From vines between 15 and 40 years of age, the grapes are very softly pressed and the juice is drained off into tank where the natural fermentation takes place. The wine is fresh and crunchy, dark fruits, notes of black pepper, lovely texture and a lingering finish. Delicious classic Piemontese wine, for all manner of meat dishes, Salumi, game and mushrooms...and much more! The new 2016 vintage is fantastic and in fact, we think with each passing year Andrea's wines are getting better and better. There is a depth and velvety texture in this wine which surpasses previous vintages. It is not polish as we are in the realms of the artisan and the farmer here, it is more the depth of expression of the wine, delicious!

Andrea Scovero is based in Bionzo in the Asti zone of Piemonte, a historic area for the production of the fantastic Barbera grape. Andrea is a wine maker and an artist, he took over from his father and converted his now 6 hectare farm to natural production. His aim was simple to produce the type of wine which he wants to drink himself. Andrea is a humble man, a quiet artisan, he is in love with his land, his work and with all the people who share this agricultural way of life. Andrea is searching for the right harmony between the wealth of nature and man's intelligence. To many people the result are very good indeed, the production is small and often the difficulty is getting hold of the wine. We are lucky enough to have found him and we love his Barbera, rich Nebbiolo, funky Sauvignon Blanc and winter Rose. The wines have a farm worker's honesty, alive , real, with the colours of the spring. His Barbera is one of contrast, subtle yet intense, layered but with a simple easy drinkability and robust heartiness. It works well with hearty Pork and Beef dishes but also from the fridge on a hot day, it is a belter. The cool labels are designed by an artist friend who did them in exchange for a few cases of his wine!

    A perfect accompaniment to steak/lamb. Rich thick with a strong bite to it.

    We've enjoyed earlier vintages, but 2015 is a stand out year - soft, dark, lingering fruit with a crisp finish. A real bargain.
