Barbera Rosato Andrea Scovero, Natural wine, hearty Rose, fresh red fruits, deep colour, with the structure for red meat! This tiny production natural Rose is a real find. Andrea bleeds off the juice after a day or two with the skins of his Barbera grapes and then ferments cool with wild yeast and bottles with no filtration. The Rose is fuller bodied than most, it has a slightly wild but enticing and quite deep (for a Rose) red colour, the aromas are of strawberry jam, yeast, bruised red apples, with a hint of 'funkiness' with some herbs and earthiness. The palate is full and very ripe, dry but with fruit compote characters, a hint of 'cidery' mature red apple and savoury finish. A delicious Rose for those who like red wine but fancy something a little lighter.

Andrea Scovero is based in Bionzo in the Asti zone of Piemonte, a historic area for the production of the fantastic Barbera grape. Andrea is a wine maker and an artist, he took over from his father and converted his now 6 hectare farm to natural production. His aim was simple to produce the type of wine which he wants to drink himself. Andrea is a humble man, a quiet artisan, he is in love with his land, his work and with all the people who share this agricultural way of life. Andrea is searching for the right harmony between the wealth of nature and man's intelligence. To many people the result are very good indeed, the production is small and often the difficulty is getting hold of the wine. We are lucky enough to have found him and we love his Barbera, rich Nebbiolo, funky Sauvignon Blanc and winter Rose. The wines have a farm worker's honesty, alive , real, with the colours of the spring. His Barbera is one of contrast, subtle yet intense, layered but with a simple easy drinkability and robust heartiness. It works well with hearty Pork and Beef dishes but also from the fridge on a hot day, it is a belter. The cool labels are designed by an artist friend who did them in exchange for a few cases of his wine!

1Reviews For Barbera Rosato Andrea Scovero 2016

  1. How good is this wine?

A good rose - clear, deep colour, plenty of fruit in the mouth, including a hint of strawberry and of cider, and a crisp finish - very drinkable. Went down nicely with Jambon de Bayonne and Courtyard Dairy cheeses.
