FIANO, Campania's drop of liquid gold...introducing Cantina del Barone di Luigi Sarno.

The Cantina del Barone is situated in the hills near Cesinali, province of Avellino in Campania.  For over a century the family of Luigi Sarno have lived off their land in this quiet corner of Italy.  Luigi’s father Antonio was also responsible for a small patch of land owned by a Neopolitan Baron and it was on this land in 1985 that he planted his first vines of Fiano after much persuasion from his family.  His three sons grew up with the vines and the work of ‘Viticultura’ in their blood and so was born the ‘Cantina del Barone’.

Luigi graduated in Viticulture and Oenology and is now responsible for this tiny 2.5 hectare estate.  It has always been run organically and according to natural wine making principles.  The environment is clean and pure and the volcanic soil is structured and rich in minerals.  Here the fascinating Fiano grape finds its perfect expression, both fruity and savoury with a distinctive minerality.

About 15 years ago Luigi planted a small plot called Particella 928 where he changed the orientation of the vines to expose them much better to the sun.  In this vineyard, the maturity is even better and the yield lower and from here he makes the wine Particella 928, a rich and complex Fiano with superb texture and a long savoury finish.

Luigi is a natural wine devotee.  His vineyard is certified organic (although he doesn't see the need to print this on the label) and he uses wild yeasts for the fermentation which ensues without intervention other than a little control over the temperature.  His wines have such purity and structure that sulphur is virtually unnecessary although he uses 1 or 2 miligrams per litre at bottling.  The final wine has a very low level of 25 mg/litre of total sulphur.
