Montenidoli - Elisabetta Fagiulo

When you meet Elisabetta she is warm and welcoming and she oozes a passion for her wines, her vineyard and life.

Her story is one of regeneration. In the early 1900's the land she later brought back to life, was abandoned. Two Great Wars and the promise of industry left it with vines overgrown by brambles and olive trees gone wild. Elisabetta and her husband Sergio came to the land in 1965.

Elisabetta's family had cultivated vines and olive trees in Custozza, not far from Verona since the 1700's so she had farming in her blood. She recalls a childhood spent wandering in the vineyards of Valpolicella.

Her family always had a respect for the land and they farmed exclusively with organic methods. They believe, that sunlight and clean air are the best medicine to make vines strong, healthy and resistant to disease and bad weather. So only when necessary, to fight parasites, would copper or sulfur be used, but this is always the exception rather than the norm.

The vineyards thrived and multiplied, planted with indigenous varietals: Vernaccia, (san Gimignano's historic white grape), Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano Gentile, and Malvasia Bianca -- The traditional grapes of Chianti.

The first wine was born in a great vintage -- 1971. Since then the vines and the wines have gone from strength to strength.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano Montenidoli Tradizionale

- This organic wine is 100% Vernaccia, (Tuscany's signature white grape). Nutty, mouth tingling white wine, great for sea food. Vernaccia Montenidoli Tradizionale is made in the old fashioned way with a little skin contact to enrich the wine. It is an organic Vernaccia with a deep brassy gold colour with an intriguing bouquet of honeysuckle and butterscotch mingled with minerality and some white pepper. On the palate the wine is minerally with lovely taught acidity and some butterscotch laced warmth. The finish has a crisp gun flint bitterness to it, clean slightly bitter and savoury.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano Montenidoli Fiore

- This organic wine is also 100% Vernaccia, but Fiore (Flower) is made with the free run juice, displaying all the finesse and elegance of which Vernaccia can be capable. It is fermented in steel, and ages on the lees to gain roundness and persistence. Displaying considerable depth,it is full, with rich white berry fruit supported by greenish accents and spice. Fiore also ages very well and drinks beautifully with 5-8 years in the bottle. Nutty full and creamy white great for fish dishes like Baccala.
