Chiroubles La Forge Chaponne 2015/16, 100% Gamay, very smooth and supple red, lovely fresh palate, texture and purity, delightful. Laurent Guillet is based in Morgon and is an understated star. He won top prize in the village for his 2013 wines and he has done it again for the 2014. This Chiroubles comes from his wife's vines and is also stunning, and was noted in the Hachette wine guide as being the absolute stand-out wine of the appellation. It is one of the wines which turned me right back on to Beaujolais and Gamay in general. Soft and supple is an understatement for this wine, it has a seductive velvety texture which is really gorgeous and aromas of blueberry and blackberry fruit. Chiroubles is one of the lesser known villages in the region, with granitic soils and undulating topography, it produces fantastic Gamay fruit. La Forge is from 50 year old vines which produce 45 hecto-litres per hectare, a low yield. It is not an organic domain but no artificial fertilisers are employed and the domain uses chemicals only as a last resort to control disease. The wine is made with carbonic maceration to maintain the fresh fruitiness and it is quite simply....lovely Beaujolais at a brilliant price.

Laurent has been making wine on the Morgon estate since 1987, and in 2009 acquired some land in Chiroubles through his marriage with Laurence whose family made wine there. They avoid artificial fertilisers and only use chemicals as a last resort to control disease. The estate has won numerous awards, including Medaille d'Or for the Morgon Cote du Py 2014.
