Cheese is a staple at Christmas dinner, and what could be better than a selection of fortified and dessert wines to pair perfectly with that post-turkey platter of fromage.

Port is the go-to cheese wine in the UK, so we've included the Tawny Dee from Niepoort, which is nutty and delicious but not too heavy when you've overdone it. Perfect for a brie, or blue. Banyuls is France's lesser-known answer to Port, and is a real gem. Softer and fruitier, try with a gorgonzola. It would also pair nicely with chocolate. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without sherry, and Gobernado's dry Oloroso is as good as it comes. Layered with aromas of walnuts, dried fruits and caramel, this is a moreish aperitif or for drinking with all manner of cheeses. Pedro Ximenez is on the sweet end of sherry and is like Christmas pudding in a glass - figgy and sticky like liquid toffee. Try with a strong blue, or a truffle pecorino perhaps! Madeira is massively underrated over here, and generally only used in cooking, which is such a shame! The Boal is on the lighter end, so has a sweetness but with a lovely zing and freshness. Amazing with a fruity wensleydale. Finally, Monbazillac is a dessert wine from France which will pair beautifully with all manner of cheeses, especially a nutty cheddar.
