Details

Encruzado Quinta dos Roques, rich, oak aged, yet elegant white wine. Encruzado's naturally citrus elements are deliciously contrasted with the creamy oak and richness of the wine. Although not a certified organic winery, Quinta dos Roques approach to viticulture and wine making is a forward thinking and sustainable one. No chemical fertilisers are used in the vineyards and the wines are elaborated with minimum intervention save for the addition of selected yeast and a little sulphite. The purity and flavour tells all, the wines are excellent and very well priced. The Encruzado is a lovely alternative to a pricey Burgundy!

Luis and Luisa Lourenco run this family estate, often attributed with reviving the reputation of Encruzado in the region. They produce a wide array of meticulously assembled wines, offering both traditional blends, and varietal wines. The Touriga Nacional here is widely considered to be the finest in Portugal, and their Encruzado is also considered one of the country's leading dry white wines.

  1. How good is this wine?

So this is a review both of a wine and of the service I received from Buon Vino.

I was reading a back edition of Decanter and it was praising the Encruzado grape. This was a gap in my wine experience despite having read about it in old British cellars, I had never tried it. I found it at Buon Vino by Quinta Dos Roques and when it arrived (wait for part two) I thought it was outstanding. It has depth, length and has a strength which is elegant. I left one bottle open for 24 hours, it was a revelation. It was delicious and very complex in a good way.

The funny thing was that the warehouse had initially sent me the Dao by the same house, I didn't notice until I opened a bottle which I had put in the fridge and out came not the straw coloured yellow of the Encruzado I expected but the deep red of the Dao. It was however delicious so I rang and asked to keep it explaining the mistake that had been made. The Buon Vino team were excellent and sent me the correct order with the price difference accurately reflected between the two wines by return. Excellent wine and excellent service, thank you, I have since ordered more.
