Espontaneo Grenache Ludovic Engelvin 2018, biodynamic wine, 100% Grenache Noir fermented juice only to make a white wine, rich, luscious, superb. This wine has not been made for several years. It was actually Ludo's first wine back in 2013, he made just a couple of barrels. Things have moved on a bit since then and he has very quickly established his reputation as a wine maker of very high ability. His red Grenache wines are superb and long lasting. But Espontaneo still remains in our view his best wine, both quirky and yet very serious in its depth of flavour, complexity and rich mouthfeel, (it tastes expensive!). A good alternative to a barrel fermented Chardonnay or white Chateauneuf, with some Civet de Lapin or Poulet, would be very nice indeed.
Ludovic Engelvin started his wine career as a somellier, running a wine shop. After studying under Didier Daganeau in the Loire Valley he decided to return to his native Languedoc, and bought a single hectare of Grenache vines, growing on sandstone and clay limestone, which he began to vinify. He quickly established himself as one of the brightest young wine making talents in France and soon sold his shop to make wine full time. He uses no mechanical intervention, just a herd of sheep to maintain the land, and only herbal remedies being used on the vineyard - no chemicals here! Bottling takes place without fining or filtration. Ludovic is a serious and sensitive soul and this is transmitted in his superb expressions of the Grenache grape variety, of which he now produces several.
