Faugeres Clos Fantine, gamey, herbaceous, smokey, structured Natural French Red. Faugères Tradition offers a smell of roasted fruits with gamey aromas and familiar garrigue notes of bay, sweet rosemary and roasted thyme and a bonfire smokiness lurks in each sniff. Made from 40% Mourvèdre with the rest made up from Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache. The Carignan is from 50-80 years old, whilst the Mourvèdre and Syrah are from 30-year-old vines. Terroir is crumbly schist, harvests are manual. Wild yeast fermentation takes place in cement and maceration last for thirty days with no temperature control. There is no oak, no filtration, no fining and no sulphur.

Clos Fantine is in the commune of Cabrerolles in Faugères, run by two sisters and one brother following the death of their parents. They maintain the vineyard with the highest respect for nature, though they don't subscribe to any organic or biodynamic certification. In their words: “We have always worked to respect what nature has to offer… Our pleasure is to listen to nature, to watch nature, and to allow her to have the energy and strength to express herself." Drinking the Faugeres will bring you close to nature, with its wild garrigue aromas and smokiness.

It's a complex, delicious wine that never fails to excite. Earthy, depth, character. It's FUNKY, so don't buy if you're looking for a crowd-pleaser. I bloody love it though.
