Gusbourne Blanc des Blancs 2014, English Sparkling wine from Kent, 100% Chardonnay, smooth, creamy and fresh fizz, very easily a Champagne alternative. Gusbourne Blanc des Blancs has a bright golden colour with a delicate mousse, and offers the classic Chardonnay aromas of green apple, citrus and mineral notes combined with buttered toast and tarte tatin. It is a well-balanced sparkling wine with a streak of zesty acidity complementing a gentle mousse that gives way to a creamy, hazelnut and baked apple.
The original Gusbourne Estate in Appledore, Kent dates back to 1410. In 2004, Andrew Weber took over the estate with a clear vision and a single goal: to create English sparkling wines that would stand up alongside the very finest offerings from across the globe. The first vines were planted that year. In 2010 the debut vintages of Gusbourne Brut Reserve 2006 and Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs 2006 were released to critical acclaim. Gusbourne quickly earned a reputation as a producer of outstanding quality wines, with accolades from some of the industry's most exacting critics. Respect for the vineyards, the fruit and the natural elements involved in winemaking means that their approach favours minimal intervention.

Praised by Alexander Armstrong on a Christmas Booze TV programme he made with Giles Coren. His wine knowledge and philosophy appeared very sound so we tried it. Marvellous stuff! My wife was not a great fan of fizz until she tried this - it has opened the door to others, but this remains our favourite. Drink slowly (if you can) to appreciate the full complexity. We'll be getting some in for Christmas.
