Gut Oggau Family Reunion Rose 2016, biodynamic wine, rare bottling, Blaufrankisch, Zwiegelt, a special and limited edition Rose from a unique wine producer. The Rose Reunion is a blend of red grapes from the old and young vines which creates a much more profound and deeper Rose than Winifred. The colour is deep, almost a light red rather than a Rose, the nose pulls you in and the palate is rich, slightly spicy, viscous yet as always very fresh. Berry fruits mix with the dark flavours of the cellar and of woodlands and earth. A delicious Rose which could be treated more like a red with the capacity to age however it is drinking beautifully. Cellaring would also be rewarded.
Gut Oggau is a 14 hectare Austrian wine estate located in the province of Burgenland by the Lake Neusiedl. The estate is run by Eduard Tscheppe and his wife Stephanie, daughter of a 2 Michelin star restaurant owner. It is a certified biodynamic estate with each wine coming from a single plot of vines with different terroirs showing different expressions in the wine. The individual personalities of the wine are expressed in the faces on the labels created by Jung von Matt (German designer) and brought together in the Gut Oggau family tree. A unique and fascinating way of describing the wines, they taste every bit as intriguing as the labels suggest.
2016 was a vintage to forget for Stephanie and Eduard. Spring brought them heavy frosts and hailstorms happened during the summer. Autumn by contrast was peaceful, warm and forgiving, and in the end delivered tiny quantities of amazing quality grapes. 'To let our wines take it all in and tell the story of the year through their complex characters, we decided to let the family members unite, to go for a family reunion.' The result wines of cumulative energy, focused strength and collective finesse. The Spirit of youth and the wisdom of maturity united in this unique and limited bottling which tells the story of a very up and down year in the vineyards.

Soft, full, rich feel in the mouth but it still manages to be refreshing and fruity. A disarmingly easy wine to drink that reveals hidden depths. Pricey? Maybe, but worth it. I have not drunk a better rosé, nothing anywhere near it. In a class of its own.
