Kydonitsa Barrique Jason Ligas, natural wine from Greece, rich, complex, unique, low in sulphur, stunning flavours. Like the sister wine, Roditis barrique, only 400 bottles of this stunning white wine were produced at the fantastic Ligas estate in Pella. The grape variety is very rare. Kydonitsa was widely grown in ancient and Byzantime times. From 1460 until 1828, this part of Greece was ruled by the Turks and under Ottoman rule alcohol consumption came to a sudden halt. Kydonitsa was almost lost in that time but was recently rediscovered in old vineyards and is now being cultivated systematically by local small growers. The result is a unique wine, aged in barrels where some 'Flor' yeast has formed on the surface of the wine adding to the complexity with a subtle saltiness, it is rich in colour and intense in aromas. This is powerful yet subtle natural white wine, quince, ripe pear and bruised apple combine with herbs, salt, resin and nutty aromas. The palate is rich, creamy and seductive with a mineral edge. Delicious wine, need Mediterranean cuisine and is a bottle of white to savour. The equally (to Roditis Barrique that is) cool label is a picture of Katina Paximon, a famous and very beautiful Greek actress. This the new vintage of this incredible complex wine from rising Greek wine making star Jason Ligas, the younger wine is fresher and vibrant but maintains all of the complexity of the older brother, absolutely delicious.

Since ancient times, the region of Pella in the Peloponnese, situated in northern Greece, was associated with wine making and described as the mother of wine, where vines abound. Jason Ligas took over this small vineyard from his parents and set about turning the normally dull Roditis grape into something very special. By converting to natural farming and reducing the yield he was able to express the terroir and the show the potential of a grape that is normally over cropped and used for cheap jug wine. The soils are loamy, sand with very good drainage and the natural environment is expressed in this stunningly fresh and complex white wine. The Cru wine is in tiny quantity, only 400 bottles of this wine are produced, grab it while you can! The other wines made by the Ligas estate are equally as impressive and offer a different spectrum of flavour to the traditional, well known grape varieties of France, Italy and Spain. Try these wines, they are really something.
