Morana Sangiovese Pratello, 100% Sangiovese, Biodynamic wine, barrel aged, tastes of Autumn! Complex and thoroughly pleasing Sangiovese, the grape that made Chianti famous. Morana harnesses the wild and tough of the Pratello environment. It has the beating heart of the animals which graze and forage in the vineyard and the lush but savoury fruit character of the Sangiovese grape. The nose explodes with wild mushroom, scrub and wild berry aromas and the palate is rich yet elegant, delicious Sangiovese from this fabulous little Biodynamic producer.
Emilio Placci took over from his father in 91. He is a simple looking guy, a broad smile, a warm manner and always ready and willing to talk about his true passion, his wine. Based in Emilia Romagna, 600 metres above sea level, tucked away from any influence of intensive farming or chemical fertilisers, this place is nature in perfect harmony. Here among the vines, wild thyme jostles with flowers, poppies, acacia, cherries and wild rose. The habitat is owned by the deer, squirrels and porcupines and Emilio sees himself as a guest, gratefully sharing in the bounty of this place. The soils are poor and sandy and the wine, made only with indigenous yeast is wild, rich and delicious. There is a real honesty in the wines here. At Pratello, they are farmers, labourers and keepers of the land. Their wines are delicious, marrying the sense of the earth with the style and quality of an instinctive wine maker, this is the kind of wine one aspires to drink every day.

Nose is ripest red fruit & spice that lingers between cedar & green pepper. Body is similarly red berry, height of summer & almost candied, but held back from the edge. In a ripe village burgundy wheelhouse in a way that reminds me of some Etna. Small but toothy tannins. M+ acid. Spice & earth prominent, very incense, cigar box, black soil, fresh ceps. A bit of volatile lift with air both plays into the earthiness, and keeps it light. It won the 4th star on interest for price, but well deserves it.
