Lugana Riserva del Lupo Ca Lojera, single vineyard Lugana, oak aged, rich and complex, great ageing potential. When i first came across this wine, it was the 1999 vintage, at that time, around 15 years old. It was a sensational expression of Lugana, a wine most people consider to be fit only for early drinking in its fresh and fruity form. The variety Trebbiano di Lugana is basically the same as Verdicchio and that would suggest ageing potential. It has some of the bitterness of Verdicchio certainly but allied to this is a clean pure fruitiness, classic green apples, loads of grapefruit, citrus notes and a long lean, lip smacking finish. The Riserva del Lupo is a wine which really needs time, seeming a little out of sorts when young with very quiet fruit and an awkwardness about it. But leave it and the wine knits together beautifully and becomes a rich and nutty glass of golden coloured nectar. Well worth taking a case and keeping if you have a cellar to fill and don't be concerned about leaving it 10 years or so! The owners Ambra and Franco Tiraboschi are now well into their seventies and are still happily running their family estate with the help of their daughter Alessandra. Like the wines they are ageing very well and show no sign of retiring just yet, that's good news, the wines are lovely.
