Altos Las Hormigos Malbec, rich, round, classic Alberto Antonini wine, the famed Italian consultant wine maker who has made such a success in Argentina. The 216 hectare estate is nearly 1000 metres above sea level and depsite the semi dessert climate, the sandy, loamy soils retain water and avoid hydric stress. The wine is fermented with natural yeast (very important for us so we are pleased!) and is then matured in concrete rather than wood so retains more finesse and freshness. The bouquet is of redcurrant, minty blackberry leaves and tenuous smoky notes followed by a soft generous palate with herbs, spicey notes and good fresh acidity. Nice for a big steak!

Altos Las Hormigas is based in Luján de Cuyo, the only officially recognised appellation within Mendoza and one of the region's premium vine growing areas. The estate is well known for specialising in Malbec, having pioneered a fresher, more elegant style of the wine. Today they are recognised as one of the country's top five producers of this particular variety. The estate covers 88 hectares with 56 in production. Unusually for the region, the winemakers work the vineyard with biodynamic practices, and aim for minimum intervention in the winery, which gives their wines a unique sense of origin.
