Established in 1875 by Vito Curatolo Arini, the winery is now run by the fifth generation of Curatolos, making it the oldest family-owned Marsala producing business. Light wines from local grapes Grillo, Inzolia, and Cataratto are fortified with white grape spirit in the traditional way. The wines are then aged for about 10 years (the minimum legal requirement for `Superiore` status is 4 years) in large Slovenian oak casks. Those ten long years make for a wine of simply stunning complexity and flavour making this one of the best value wines around. Itis off dry rather than sweet, think traditional Amontillado sherry and you are some way near. The flavours are delcious and this is very versatile wine, slightly chilled from the fridge, the salty nutty dried fruit character makes for an excellent aperitif with a bowl of almonds or you can have with pudding particularly at Xmas!
