Meerlust Rubicon is a very claret style red wine with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood and intense spiciness. A lovely glass of red wine that has become an icon of wine production in the Cape.

Long recognized for producing world-class wines, Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, the traditional dedication to the art of winemaking continues under the guidance of Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation custodian of this seventeenth-century national monument. Meerlust is situated fifteen kilometers south of Stellenbosch, with the blue crescent of False Bay a mere five kilometers away.

Rubicon was the brainchild of the Nico Myburgh, father of the current custodian of Meerlust. After a trip to Bordeaux, he realised that the area around the Eerste River Valley, site of the Meerlust estate has the same terroir of decompoased granite and clay as the famed estates of the Garonne as well as similar cooling coastal breezes. He set about to produce a Bordeaux style wine from Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet France to rival the quality of Bordeaux. The wine's name Rubicon is a reference to the Rubicon river, the border to ancient Rome and point at which Julius Ceasar supposedly uttered the infamous words 'Alea iacta est. The die is cast.'
