Details

Monfarina Domaine Giachino 2016, natural wine, local grape, crisp,100% Jacquere, crisp, lean, fresh with sometimes a hint of funky richness. A local variety that makes crisp, elegant wine. Monfarina in particular has in youth a steely, mountain stream like personality which mellows after a year or two in bottle. The acidity is bracing and fruit very clean. For an interesting alternative to Chablis from one of the lesser known corners of France, Monfarina is a great choice. "Monfarina" comes from the name of a traditional dance the 'Monfarine' from Savoie and Piedmont, hence the little dancing fella on the label. Most vintages have lower alcohol too so you can sink a couple of bottles without feeling to bad about it! The 2016 vintage has taken a really interesting and delicious turn in its development with notes of rich stone fruit, honey and herbs coming through while maintaining its underlying firm acidity and freshness, it is simply delicious.

Domaine Giachino was created in 1998 when Frédéric took over the 1,5 hectares family estate from his grandfather Marius Genton. Later joined by his brother David, they progressively enlarged the estate to 9 hectares and enriched their vineyards with new grape varieties particular to their area of the Savoie. Their values and philosophy made a switch to natural and organic methods inevitable and this they did in 2006. The vineyards of Domaine Giachino are in Savoie, not far from Chambéry, on the hillsides of Mont Granier. The soils are moraine, clay and limestone; a specific geology to the area and source of the uniqueness of their delicious organic wines.
