Nat Cool Drink Me Baga Niepoort, hands off wine making, Carbonic Maceration, soft, light expression of Baga. Baga is a touch grape which is very high in tannin and generally needs time to mature and express its delightful floral aromas and fruit character. However, here in the Bairrada with 80-100 year old vines and hands off wine making including carbonic maceration (which generally extracts less tannin), the astringent elements of the Baga grape are tamed and the resulting wine is pure juicy, fresh red with delicious wild berries, floral notes and light body. This wine is great fun, on opening there is a note of spritz but this vanishes quickly, I reckon it is just the wine's youthful spirit leaping from the bottle on its re-acquaintance with oxygen. What follows is very easy, juicy red which can be enjoyed chilled in the summer with a BBQ or at room temp in the autumn with some field mushrooms. The litre bottle and 11.5% abv is fantastic as between two, you have enough wine and not enough booze to make you suffer for it. A great addition to Niepoort portfolio, the wines go from strength to strength.

Founded in 1842, the small Port house of Niepoort is now run by 5th generation brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort. Its easy to forget that it was only a few years ago that Niepoort was only sought out by a small band of faithful followers, as stock of remarkable, artisan wines built up in the cramped old Niepoort lodge in Rua Serpa Pinto in Vila Nova de Gaia. These days, with a formidable international reputation which spans all styles from aged tawny to vintage, and all points in between, demand threatens to outstrip supply. Ports are all made at the old Museu de Lagares in Vale de Mendiz, which has the only circular granite Lagares in the Douro. Niepoort's mission has always been to be a "niche player", to produce distinctive Ports and Douro wines, combining centuries-old tradition with innovation. This continues today with new vineyard projects to produce dry, natural wines in the Douro - Bairrada - Dão triangle. The importance attached to understanding soils, climates and grape varieties has led the current head of the business Dirk Niepoort down the path of Biodynamics, a practise that respects the "moods" of Nature, to find a balance between biodiversity and minimum intervention, and the wines really speak for themselves. Many of their vineyards now have organic certification, which is very much against the grain in contemporary Port making. After 150 years of doing things just a little differently, Niepoort are now highly respected for their delicious Ports and an increasing array of natural table wines.

  3. How good is this wine?

For natural wine lovers or those new to them - this is the wine to try! It is just a delight - lovely & light, could even be drunk chilled as it almost ha s a crisp finish, but still packed with bags of flavour. You can tell it’s natural but it’s not too radical in style - so is a great introduction if your wanting to try them. Great to pair with most foods, as there’s different notes going on that could enhance lots of flavours & meat & cheese, would be a good one to pair with meaty fish such as Turbot too. Yet also a delight to be just enjoyed on its own - simply a joy - everyone must try it !

First tried this at a wine tasting event and it was easily our favourite wine on the night. Was served slightly chilled and was light and fresh. Lovely strawberry taste.
