La Vuelta 2026 Spanish Wine Case – 6 Bottles
For all you natural wine and cycling enthusiasts, we know you are out there!
Cycle racing is an amazing way of advertising the beauty and diversity of a country to attract tourism and similarly we use this context to talk about the country’s wine. This year’s epic race, the 3rd and final 'Grand Tour' of the cycling season, will as always show some stunning scenery as it sweeps through the heat drenched vineyards of the South of Spain and hopefully for those watching, pique their curiosity enough to start sampling these lesser known wines and maybe plan a trip to this incredible part of Europe. La Vuelta 2026! This years race is very much focussed on the south of the country and the extreme environment of Andalucia. It is going to be a seriously hard race. Although the stages are generally shorter than in France and Italy, most of the event will be under scorching skies and through some of the driest, most arid landscapes in Europe. After the summer we have had, the riders must be quaking in their cycling shoes at the prospect of another three weeks of 40 degree temps. This is without the doubt the world’s toughest sport. In terms of wine, being focussed in the south, many of Spain’s famous DOs are missing this year. No Albarino from the north west, no Rioja, no Ribera, no Castilla Y Leon, nothing from southern Catalonia (Penedes, Cava, etc) and with no finish in Madrid, nothing from the Gredos. So I have had to work with our Portfolio to find wines which fit the route this year as (apart from Sherry) we don’t have a large number of wines from the south of Spain. In the end, the results are spectacular! To be fair, the start in Provence in France has helped as I have been able to slip in a very lovely Provence red from Valerie Courreges who is based almost on the route in Brignoles. Then the race does skirt the northern area of Catalonia with a finish in Andorra, not far from where fabulous wine maker Salvador Batlle Barrabeig, makes his stunning Cosmic wines. The rest of the selection are all from the south with some amazing skin maceration whites, salty dry Montilla-Moriles and of course with a finish in Jerez, an excellent bottle of Fino. I am super pleased with this case, one for the adventurous for sure, but if you like cycling, Spain and its vinous heritage and incredible food, then this case of natural wine is for you. Salud!
