PIGATO CRESCENDO SELVADOLCE 2018, biodynamic wine, no added sulphites, full bodied white, ripe stone fruits, oozing sunshine. A fabulous example of one of the rarer grapes of the Mediterranean. Pigato has some similarity with Vermentino, a ripe soft palate, medium acidity and textural profile. It is fantastic with the local foods or just on its own as full bodied aperitif.

When I tasted these wines from Selvadolce, I was taken aback with surprise and delight. I knew there was great wine in Liguria but probably not this great. Both red and white have incredible depth and length of flavour. The Red Rossese is a great Barolo alternative, has the ripe fruits and fullness in the mouth but without Barolo's sometimes overbearing structure and tannins. Selvadolce, is a small biodynamic farm in Bordighera on the coast of Liguria, and is the work of Aris Blancardi. It is a family story – the main production being a flower farm that has been around for more than a century on the Bordighera Hills. After working as a horse veterinarian, Aris came back to the family business, taking over his father’s work and improved the farming practices by looking for alternative ways to grow flowers. He learnt the basics of biodynamic farming in the nearby Langhe, then with Nicholas Joly from Savennieres. He was convinced to start making wine from some old plantings made by his Grandfather and some new vines of Rossese. From the start, he had no guidance and so worked according to instinct and by watching nature and so natural wines following Biodynamic principles is what he made.

Today Aris looks after 7 hectare of vineyards that are strongly influenced by the sea and the powerful mistral winds. The vines are comprised of Pigato, Vermentino and Rossese that he planted at 600m altitude onsandy soil, close to the inland village of Dolceacqua. Both red and white are full, intriguing, very fresh, complex and so purely scented of the Italian Riviera that you feel like you are drinking sunshine. With the famous dishes of the region, Tuna, Capers, Tomatoes, Olive Oil and of course Pesto, these wines are simply stunning.
