Primavera Clos Ouvert 2012, natural wine, Pias and other grapes, no added sulphur, wild and delicious, medium bodied, smokey, very fine natural wine from Chile. The Primavera 2012 is the last vintage of this blend, it works beautifully, dry and savoury but with Chilean richness, notes of dark fruit, tobacco leaf (from the Pais!) and smoke, a little earthy and totally delicious. It was served for many months on the tasting menu at 2 star L'Enclume with a Carpaccio dish, very delicious pairing, a great wine now at an amazing price, not much left though and going fast.

You know you are talking about a boutique winery when you put the name into google and no info comes up! This little band of Frenchman from the Loire Valley led by the rogue of Chilean wine making, Louis-Antoine Luyt have had a tough time of it trying to establish their naturally produced wines. On top of the many difficulties of establishing biodynamic production and trying to make fine wine from the unesteemed local Pais variety, they were hit by the earth quake that desimated large parts of Chile in 2009. They lost a lot of that year's production and Louis-Antoine was himself trapped in the devastation for some time. Louis Antoine is a bit of a force of nature himself and his wines have a wildness to them. Sometimes, it isn't quite right, sometimes the bottle just doesn't sing, almost like (Louis himself) it can't be bothered. But when the Clos Ouvert wine wants to speak to you, you are captivated and very possibly will fall in love. If great wine is like art, Louis Antione Luyt and his Clos Ouvert wines are as artistic as they come.

2Reviews For Primavera Clos Ouvert 2012

  1. How good is this wine?

Took a risk on bottle variation given the bottle age plus no sulphur dynamic, and description by team Buonvino ("sometimes it can't be bothered"?)

Bloody glad I did. Cranberry and red cherry fights for attention with charred steak (and maybe some thyme, stilton even?!), bacon fat and pipe tobacco smokr on the nose. Great balance of mouthwatering acidity and refined tannins, and beautiful mouthfeel on the palate, surprisingly light on its feet. The finish is really long, developing from sharper cranberry, through savoury meatiness, to a lingering darker cherry flavour with a hint of toasted almond. On returning to it 20 mins later it had also opened up somewhat and the fruit shows more.

You might guess that I liked this. Might be a bit Russian roulette bottle-by-bottle but I'd say the reward relays the risk.

  2. How good is this wine?

This wine is a heavy smokey number with a slightly oaky flavour.
