Domaine Matassa

In 2001 Tom Lubbe purchased a small, hillside vineyard high up in the hills of the Coteaux du Fenouillèdes, in the Roussillon region of France, called Clos Matassa, planted with old-vine Carignan. Soils are schist and slate surrounded by garrigue. Tom employs biodynamic methods, aiming to be as natural as possible, only adding a bit of sulphur at bottling. Because of the high altitude, the growing season here is longer, which gives better fruit development. He makes a superb Carignan, as well as other blends using local grape varities such as Grenache Gris and Maccabeu.
