Pineau Des Charentes was originally created by accident way back in the 16th century. A wine maker added his still wine to a barrel he believed to be empty but in fact contained the eau de vie from cognac production. The barrel was set aside and left to mature and upon tasting they discovered that this combination made the most wonderful aperitif, and the production has continued in the same way ever since. This particular house, Puy Gaudin, started its focus on Pineau Des Charentes production at the end of the Second World War when the region finally obtained its own AOC status.
