It would be impossible to recount here the difficult times and hard struggle that brothers Ramzi and Sami Ghosn have been through to establish their winery in the fertile but turbulent Bekaa valley. I met Sami once at a dinner at the Angel at Hetton Gastropub, he was great speaker and told stories of picking grapes with missiles flying over head. Far removed from the gentle harvest of Southern France, this winery has grown out of turmoil and the results are fantastic. Less famous than Chateau Musar, Massaya wine nevertheless express a rich deep full bodied character similar to their more illustrious counterparts. The Tanaïl/Massaya vineyards are located at an altitude of 1000 metres above sea level in the fertile Bekaa Valley where the slopes are protected by Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon mountains. Free of frost and diseases, the Bekaa Valley enjoys a unique climate with long gentle summers, wet winters and an average temperature of 25 degrees - perfect for viticulture and for quality wine.
