The Mitolo family arrived in Australia in the 1950s from Abruzzo in Italy with a background in winemaking. After years working as market farmers, Frank Mitolo also started making wine for friends and family. In 1999, they met with winemaker Ben Glaetzer and dreamed up Mitolo wines, which aimed to capture the richness of the McClaren Vale. Their ethos is to produce wines of individuality, integrity, quality, purity, elegance and power. The first Mitolo wine was produced in 2000, and since then Mitolo have added another 10 wines to the range. The winery works closely with its growers, the Loprestis. The Loprestis, who also emigrated from Italy, produce fruit of the highest quality from heavy clay soils which are kept fresh by the sea breeze. In the winery, Ben takes a ‘hands-off’ approach, fermenting cool to retain purity, and using a range of barrel coopers to generate complexity yet respect and enhance the fruit.
