Paglione

The Azienda Agricola Paglione is in the historic area of the Daunia in northern Puglia. The nearby town Lucera from where the local DOC takes its name dates back well over 2000 years and was possibly founded and named by the Etruscans, in which case the name probably means Holy Wood (luc = ‘wood’, eri = ‘holy’). The fertile land around the city is home to many crops, like tomatoes, wheat and olives. There are around 80-100 hectares of vines in the DOC of Lucera, mostly planted to the main grape Nero di Troia with some Montepulciano, Sangiovese and white grapes, Bombino Bianco, Malvasia and Trebbiano. The Paglione farm between the Tavoliere and the Sub Appenine Dauno zone was the fruit if a union between two families, Faccilongo and Albano. In 1994, Beniamino and Maria Costanza started to convert the land of their parents into organic farming but mainly to produce high quality Olives and Tomatoes. The vines came a little later, located in Contrada Perazzelle and Mezzana Grande, they have been farmed organically since the start with the hand of artisan always near to care for the vines and the wine making process. The few hectares of vines produce approximately 18000 bottles a year across 5 different wines, 3 red, a rose and a skin contact white wine. The Nero di Troia grape, (also called Uva di Troia) has fairly large berries, which cope well with the heat of the region and produce wines with a depth of fruit character, tannin and alcohol but with a little more subtlety than the Puglia's ubiquitous Primitivo. Paglione are wines of great honesty; deep, full, slightly rustic and extremely moreish. The orange wine Eclettico made from 50/50 Bombino and Malvasia with 8 days on the skin is particularly fine, the elegant tannins and ripe stone fruits combine with fresh acid and delicious orange wine texture in the mouth.
