Aphros Vinhao Vinho Verde Tinto, biodynamic wine, rare Vinhao grape, cool climate red, prickly red wine. Aphros Vinhao has an impenetrable opacity, presents a slightly prickly sensation in the mouth and then bursts out smilingly with thick gobs of bramble jam and exotic black cherries and black raspberries. You can almost smell the colour of this distilled purple juices as if the skins had been freshly ripped off the flesh and just finished fermenting in the glass. It is from the vineyards of Vasco Croft spread over 20 hectares not far from the Lima river. This is a beautiful natural environment, rich in bio-diversity, in which we find, besides the vines, forests with species of acacia, oak, beech, pine and eucalyptus, chestnuts orchards and a park of century old monumental trees. A fully biodynamic estate, the wines here are different from the norm in this region where sulphur use and manipulation is common place.

Aphros is perfectly situated on exceptional soil and gently sloping south-facing hillsides within the Vinhao Verde area.  The sun exposure is ideal and is balanced with the cooling Atlantic breezes.  This combination produces wines with lovely acidity and minerality.

The 20 hectare estate is rich in biodiversity, which is key for healthy vines. Here you'll find forests with species of acacia, oak, beech, pine and eucalyptus, chestnuts orchards and a park of century old monumental trees. They farm biodynamically and use 60 clay amphorae lined with beeswax for their fermentations.

Vasco Croft has run the winery since 2004.  He is a lifelong student of Rudolf Steiner and a passionate exponent of biodynamic viticulture.  The winery has developed from modest beginnings in 2004 to being one of the most important in the region with an expansion of the vineyard area, new cellars and now visitor and arts centre.

The wines remain the same, authentic, interesting and delicious.
