Biodynamic Austrian wine from Gut Oggau, Atanasius, Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch, fresh and elegant, fruity, alove, some residual CO2, possibility of a light petillance. Atanasius is made very simply in stainless steel with natural yeast to produce a stunning well balanced and vibrant red wine with Burgundy like finesse. When getting to know Atanasius 2018 he appears charming and open, affectionate and gentle. His appearance is attractive, not shallow, he has developed structure, but hasn’t tapped his full potential yet. Although with each passing year, Atanasius gets slightly more mature, fuller bodied and serious. Every vintage retains its confidence, straight forward nature and youthful spirit. The 2018 in particular is a return the essence of this wine, delicious red, impossible not to enjoy but young, a bit crazy and a bit wild. The 18 does have residual CO2 which gives it lift and great energy and freshness, and works well with the fruit character which bursts out of the glass.

Gut Oggau is a 14 hectare Austrian wine estate located in the province of Burgenland by the Lake Neusiedl.

The estate is run by Eduard Tscheppe and his wife Stephanie, daughter of a 2 Michelin star restaurant owner. It is a certified biodynamic estate with each wine coming from a single plot of vines with different terroirs showing different expressions in the wine. The individual personalities of the wine are expressed in the faces on the labels created by Jung von Matt (German designer) and brought together in the Gut Oggau family tree. A unique and fascinating way of describing the wines, they taste every bit as intriguing as the labels suggest.

This bottle of red was recommended by a waiter whilst chatting about wine. Enjoyed this sat in front of a log burner – smooth easy drinking fruity red. Dark in colour and lovely oaky taste.

black fruits, lovely tannins, some spice, and a long finish. Beautifully executed, a good surprise!

  3. Rael

Smashing blaufränkisch from cult bio producer Gut Oggau. The “Andy Murray” (as I like to call it) shows deep dark fruits with well-balanced acidity and hints of (delicious) farmyard funkiness. A real crowd pleaser at a recent dinner – lovely food accompaniment

Firstly the wine was delivered incredibly quickly, can’t fault the website or service. The wine itself was lovely. Fruity, funky fun natural wine. Easy to drink but very enjoyable.
