Atanasius Gut Oggau 2022

Atanasius Gut Oggau, biodynamic Austrian wine from Gut Oggau.  Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch, fresh and elegant, fruity, can be some residual CO2, possibility of a light petillance.  Certainly there is in the 2021 vintage and all the better for it, it is superb.  Atanasius is made very simply in stainless steel with natural yeast. It is a stunning, vibrant red wine with Burgundy like finesse. When getting to know Atanasius, he appears charming and open, affectionate and gentle. His appearance is attractive, not shallow, he has developed structure, but hasn’t tapped his full potential yet. Although with each passing year, Atanasius gets slightly more mature, fuller bodied and serious. Every vintage retains its confidence, straight forward nature and youthful spirit.  A delicious red, impossible not to enjoy but still young, a bit crazy and a bit wild.

Gut Oggau is a 14 hectare Austrian wine estate located in the province of Burgenland by the Lake Neusiedl.

The estate is run by Eduard Tscheppe and his wife Stephanie, daughter of a 2 Michelin star restaurant owner. It is a certified biodynamic estate with each wine coming from a single plot of vines with different terroirs showing different expressions in the wine. The individual personalities of the wine are expressed in the faces on the labels created by Jung von Matt (German designer) and brought together in the Gut Oggau family tree. A unique and fascinating way of describing the wines, they taste every bit as intriguing as the labels suggest.
