Stefano Bellotti began as an eighteen year old in 1977, reclaiming the family farm where there was less than 1 hectare of vineyard in existing use.

He began working organically from the beginning, and introduced biodynamic methods in 1984. The wines of Degli Ulivi are pure and natural, made without manipulation. Their belief is that the art of wine making is to accompany the wine through its natural transformation process. In addition to grape growing, the estate has a diversified production of fruits, vegetables and cereals, and keeps a variety of farm animals. This biodiversity is an essential factor in biodynamic farming, which treats farms as self-contained, self sufficient entities requiring little or no inputs from the outside. Their wines are bursting with character a little funk, and a lot of heart. A true taste of Piemonte.

Brilliant wine, probably not technically correct but great vivacity and character. It would be great if there were more wines that had such personality.

Why would you drink a frizzante red wine on a cold December evening with snow on the ground and barely enough light in the day to see past the end of the garden? Well you might for reasons of nostalgia as I did. Rob described this wine as young and a little wild and that it may be drunk cool from the fridge. I haven’t drunk “fizzy red” since wild parties in the late 1960s when Lambrusco was as cheap as Hirondelle and Liebfraumilch, and about as appetising as Watney’s Red Barrel. All of it was consumed in the interest of approaching girls without fear, and to facilitate Mick Jagger imitative dancing on the developing R&B club scene ( “……I’m gonna tell ya how its gonna be….”. ). Truly the bad old days as far as the drinks went ( lager-and -lime and vodka-and-lime are two other abominations that come to mind) ……on the other hand I was young and wild and so were the girls so it wasn’t all bad news….we were cool then, but not from the fridge! This was a fresh fruity lively number …drunk with spaghetti, with mushrooms cream and bacon sauce, and finished over some Yarlsberg cheese with Nairn’s multi-seeded GF biscuits.
Tasty, yes and a little wild……….and cool.

Terrific wine with lots of character. Lambrusco like – but not as fizzy and with more complexity.

A very interesting wine with lots of flavour and length. Very moreish and I’d buy again. Despite the crown cap not sparkling.

I discovered this back in France a few months ago and it’s become a go-to ever since. It’s light and easy but has plenty depth and complexity. Love this for an aperitif

this was delicious – reminiscent of warm Tuscan evenings and endless summer days – great with or without food

I am sure that many people have been put off lightly sparkling red wine after sipping a cheap and cheerful conventional Lambrusco wine. This is the wine that simply will change everybody’s mind. Superb.
