Resonance Champagne Marie Courtin Extra Brut , Biodynamic wine, 100% Pinot Noir, natural Champagne full of energy, tension and flavour. ‘Résonance’ refers to the balancing energies of earth and sky that affect the creation of a wine from its surrounding terroir. This beautiful natural sparkling wine is the first from Biodynamic producer Dominique Piollot and is 100% Pinot Noir (the main grape of the region of the Cotes des Bars). A biodynamically farmed Pinot Noir sourced from massale selection vines 35-40 years in age from a single parcel located in Polisot (Côte des Bar). The fruit for Resonance comes from the top of the slope where there is little topsoil with clay and Kimmeridgean limestone bands similar to those found in Chablis. The wine is fermented in stainless steel using native yeasts for both fermentation, aged in stainless steel and bottled with no dosage. It is extremely fresh, lively, delicate with a natural balance of taught, racy acidity and underlying richness and texture. This Champagnes cuts and yet softens with creamy mushroom notes and ripe stone fruits. A Champagne that cleans the palate rather than laying heavy on it. It is wine that needs some oxygen to fully come alive and a couple of hours after releasing the cork, the wine opens up and shows depth of flavour and complexity alongside its zingy freshness. A lovely apero, it also matches very well with some smoked salmon, some salty snacks or a light fish mousseline as an appetiser.

Marie Courtin is a tiny 6 hectare domaine in Polisot in the Cotes des Bars, the southernmost region of Champagne.

It is run by Dominique Piollot wife of Roland who also has vines in the village and bottles wine under his family name Piollot (see the related wines below). Dominique is a fantastic 'Artisan Vigneron', she has converted her vines to Biodynamic certification (demeter) over a period of 6 years and her wines are the purest expression of traditional method fizz. She uses wild yeasts of course and manages to make some wines without any sulphur. Her Cuvee are very fresh, the acidity creating a veil of elegance and restraint which marks them out from other Champagnes. With food, they are superb and they also age very well although at only 12-15000 bottles in total and 6 cuvee the wine doesn't hang around long.

When first opened, her bottles can seem a little closed but these wines reward a little patience. Uncork the bottle and have a glass then put a Champagne closure on and leave in the fridge over night. In the morning, the wine will have come to life, brimming with rich flavours, nuttiness, toasted brioche and complexity.

When meeting Dominique and Roland, one is struck by their quiet, thoughtful nature and warmth. They are a spiritual couple who feel very attached to the land in their native village of Polisot, not far from the Chablis region in southern Champagne. Dominique expresses this sensitivity in her wine making and approach to viticulture, she is 'true believer' in Biodynamics, and the names of the wines carry their own spiritual significance.

My second bottle is still laying down waiting for a more deep and accurate enjoyment.
Beautiful, precise and vertical. A fresh and different expression of a blanc de noirs. Very elegant champagne with a strong expression of the terroir and the splendid vigneron which Marie Courtin is.
Totally recommended for a special occasion. Great price point.
