Cotes du Rhone Domaine des Aphillantes, biodynamic wine, Grenache, Syrah, rich and round, earthy and honest, superb. Not far from Gigondas in the Rhône valley, Domaine Les Aphillanthes is a 37 hectares wine estate currently run by Daniel Boulle and his wife Hélène. Fourth generation winemakers, Daniel took over the estate in 1987 and started producing his own cuvee from grapes that until that time had been sold to the coopérative. In 2000 after treating his son’s bad eczema with natural remedies, he decided to switch to Biodynamic principles. Roll the clock forward and they are now making outstanding natural Cotes du Rhone, both red and white and rose at the domaine. I recently tasted the new 2016 vintage of this excellent cotes du rhone and was delighted to find all that terroir character that i expect from this producer present in the wine. Slightly rough hewn, and still very young, (these are wines that age beautifully and show rich profound fruit and weight after several years in bottle) but with plenty of sweet red fruit at its core and well balanced acidity and soft tannins. Fantastic red for Sunday roasts!
