Quite simply our favourite producer here at Buon Vino. Wines of sheer class, intrigue, complexity and downright deliciousness. Visiting Courtois is a journey into the spiritual and in our view he offers a vision for what wine should be. His wines are intellectual, artistic, esoteric yet easy. They can be served with Michelin Star food or enjoyed on the terrace with a piece of cheese. They are delicious and refreshing in Summer, superb in Autumn, warming and cosy in Winter and energising in Spring. They taste just a little different depending on when you open them and seem to live and breath in the bottle. Above all Courtois are wines of pure emotion. Having said that, be careful these bottles are not for all! They do not conform to any convention or style. They are made in the large part from lesser known and noncommercial grape varieties and they are not aimed at any particular market. They are the simple and purest expression of nature in all its glory. We hope you treasure and enjoy this mixed case of Courtois wines as much as we do.

Julien Courtois, following in his father Claude’s footsteps, created his own vineyard, Le Clos de la Bruyère, in 1998. Based in Soings en Sologne, the 4.5 hectare domain is run by Julien and his girlfriend, Heidi. They work with seven varieties of grapes, including an ungrafted Menu Pineau, planted in 1978, which is used to make the Originel wine. They adhere strictly to the principle of making wines from low-yield vineyards, so the wines can be as concentrated as possible. Their work is guided by the natural rhythms of nature, and all the work takes place by hand. Chemical treatments are eschewed in favour of plant-based remedies. “We make wines that are different, natural and rich from the values provided by a sane wine-making process,” Julien explains. “Whether in the vineyards or in the cellar, wines are made without any chemical products, which gives them a unique and singular taste.” Tasting his wines is one of those rare wine experiences which make you feel privileged to be tasting something special produced by someone unique.
