La Panzudas Priorat HODGKINSON 2023 Full bodied natural/organic wine from the distinguished Priorat region in Catalonia, Spain. Only Rioja and Priorat hold the classifivations DOQ (denomonacio d’origen qualificada) in all of Spain. Virtually all wines in Priorat are hand harvesdted due to the rugged landscape making machine harvesting impossible. The “Licorella ” soil is made of black slate and quartz. This forces the vines to dig deep into the soil for access water and the necessary nutrients leading to very low yielding but intense highly concentrated wines. These factors tend to make wines from Priorat at the higher end of the market making La Panzudas a real bargain!
The wine is 100% Garnacha although Carinena is also permitted within this DOQ. Fermentation takes place using native yeasts and there is no filtration, fining or added sulphites. About as natural as you can get! It has a powerful yet juicy character dominated with strawberry and raspberry with some herbal notes on the finish. Unlike many wines from Priorat this wine is matured in Clay amphorae rather than oak to highlight the freshness of the wine.
