Maremosso Catarrato (Orange Wine) 2022, (used to be Baglio Catarrato) Natural Wine, Orange Wine, 100% Cataratto, great value entry point for the Orange wine style. If you are not familiar with orange wines, then Maremosso Catarrato (Orange Wine) 2022 is a great place to start without breaking the budget.  No, it doesn’t have the finesse and style of a Radikon or Skerk.  But this little Sicilian wine offers all of the characteristics of natural, orange wine at a fraction of the price.  Made by the excellent people at Ciello in Alcamo, Sicily.  Cataratto grapes spend a few weeks macerating with the skins during the wild yeast fermentation.  The wine is bottled with low sulphur and no filtration.  Savoury, pithy fruit character, herbs, ginger, spices and more abound.  A great little glass of orange, ideal for fish curries and such like.  Great with a ‘Pasta con le Sarde’, (Pasta with Sardines, pine nuts and raisins) the classic sweet and sour peasant dish from the region.

The dynamic Vesco family took over the winery 10 years ago and have since revolutionised the viticultural practices and invested heavily in cutting edge technology for the winery and bottling line.

Their hundred hectares of organic vineyards are located high up in the hills above Alcamo. The wines are all certified organic and planted on south-east facing slopes on sandy soils 150 – 300m above sea level. The climate is clearly suited for producing the best quality grapes. The results of their excellent work are evident in the fragrant crisp Catarratto and fruity, crunchy Nero d'Avola that they produce at outstanding value.  Night harvesting and modern temperature controlled fermentations result in a bright, fresh wines. The wines are unfiltered and have an encouragingly hazy appearance, excellent natural wine at a great price.

Finding Orange wine is not as easy as you think, not many places stock it,and when you do find it in a shop it’s usually over priced. I was given a bottle of Cataratto as a gift and then I was lucky to find that Boun Vino sold it online, and I would not need to pay over the odds and travel to London to buy it. The wine tastes of fresh apples, had no acidic aftertaste and goes well with light meat or even a salad. Loved it so much i bought 6 bottles.

I received this bottle by mistake in an order. Have finally tried it – it’s wonderful. Had it with butternut squash and sage soup and braised cabbage and kale. Light with a little bit of acidity up-front and no aftertaste.

So about the mistake but glad you liked the wine and it worked out. Thank you/ Rob Bagot

Amazing, refreshing with a slight funk from the natural fermentation. Awesome!

Wish I could get some more

I bought this wine as a birthday present for my partner. He fell in love with orange wines in France last year, and ever since we’ve been looking for an orange wine that’s nice but does not leave us penniless.
This one right here was the winner! Very fresh and easy to drink! Definitely ordering again soon.

  6. Isabel

Very honey-like taste, would pair really well with cheese like a manchego. Complex palette that is slightly mineral and slightly buttery. Tasted almost Christmas-like. Would highly recommend!

Wonderful nose of pear, peach and apple. Reminiscent of cider but with a wine taste! A great affordable orange wine that is perfect chilled on a warm spring/summer day.

Has the cider-ish qualities of natural wines but you can still taste the classic Sicilian grapes
