Montevertine Pergole Torte, NEW VINTAGE, 100% Sangiovese, Iconic Tuscan Natural Wine, barrel matured for 24 months, sweet red cherry, plum, spice, very expressive varietal wine. Montevertine is an estate near Radda, right in the heart of the Chianti Classico denomination, and one of the highest altitude plots. They left the appellation in 1981 as Manetti (who presided over the wines at the time) sought to create wines that were a pure expression of Sangiovese, and not blend it with other varieties as was required by the appellation law. The Pergole Torte vineyard is made up of the oldest vines on the estate, and the wines are fermented in cement before being racked into large Slavonic oak barrels, and then smaller French oak barrels for the final six months. Le Pergole Torte is only produced in exceptional years, and is full bodied, elegant, full of sweet red cherry, plum, and subtle cinnamon and mint characteristics, with beautifully integrated tannin. This is Sangiovese at its best and rightly holds an Iconic status in the Pantheon of great Tuscan wines.

Montevertine is situated in the heart of the Chianti region, 3 kilometers or so south of Radda, on a plot around 425m above sea level.

Sergio Manetti acquired Montevertine in 1967, and initially intended to make wine as a hobby for friends and family. With some considerable success with his first vintage, he decided to give up his livelihood and dedicate himself to wine. They replanted and installed new cellars, and began bottling this now iconic wine. Though he is no longer alive, his son now runs the vineyard in keeping with the traditions of his father. They grow Sangiovese exclusively, and their wines are made from the difference parcels on the estate. All wines are made with respect for the land, and the wines are bottled without filtration. For lovers of Sangiovese there can't be many better buys - certainly worth cellaring.
