Whereas the 2017 vintage was low volume but high quality austere wine for long ageing, 2018 was above all generous, to quote Athenais de Beru, ‘ 2018 was a real gift’. There is good volume of wine and the style is for earlier drinking, ripe, rich, textured and utterly delicious.
Athenais says…..’Due to our location, on the hill of the Béru, we benefit from a higher altitude than the rest of the Chablis appellation. This microclimate enabled us to make wines with a concentration of maturity and acidity, which brings a really interesting balance to the very focused and pure, full-bodied profile of the 2018 vintage.’
The Chablis Terroirs 2018, possibly the most immediately enjoyable white wine we have tasted for a long time. Chablis is not about crispy little bistro wines watery pale and chilled to death. No, great Chablis is full bodied, deep, layered white wine expressing its Terroir and the grandeur of the Chardonnay grape. Chablis Terroirs 2018 from Chateau de Beru is like that. Both Cotes aux Pretes and Montserre, are each one an expression of their site location, each with their own personalities, each a reflection of where the grapes have grown, the geology, the exposition, and the typicity of the vine itself. These wines from one of the greats of the region make quite simply, ‘The perfect Glass of Chablis’.
