Niepoort Vintage Port 2017, rare vintage Port of exceptional quality, structure, freshness and complexity. Wines like this are produced when nature decides to bless you with the best it can offer, 2017 for Niepoort was just that. I tasted the wines with Dirk in Manchester and his excitement for this years Port was palpable. Of course, he has to be enthusiastic every year, he has to sell his Port but 2017 was very obviously something special. The wine spoke for itself, even in youth, it is quite simply stunning to drink, and so fresh, the tannins, alcohol, fruits, acidity are all seamless and in perfect balance. In fact, it is a myth that you can’t or shouldn’t drink Vintage Port young, according to Dirk, his best Ports are beautiful for the first 2-3 years after harvest, vibrant, open and full of bright fruits, then they go to sleep all of sudden, like a sleeping beauty and he says you shouldn’t wake them for 10 even 15 years when they will come back to life again but in a different form, more mature, savoury and intellectual. Of course the length of time you need to leave them depends in the vintage (that is why you need to buy a few so you can keep testing them!). In the case of 2017, try it now, it is gorgeous, and so elegant and light in touch, it could be a glass of Burgundy, if you decide to leave it, the good thing about the half bottle is it matures quicker, so leave this one 6-8 years and it will already be showing something pretty special.

I could bore you with technical info about 2017 was such a great vintage but instead, read it from the horses mouth here on our blog, words and info from Dirk Niepoort.

Founded in 1842, the small Port house of Niepoort is now run by 5th generation brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort.

Its easy to forget that it was only a few years ago that Niepoort was only sought out by a small band of faithful followers, as stock of remarkable, artisan wines built up in the cramped old Niepoort lodge in Rua Serpa Pinto in Vila Nova de Gaia. These days, with a formidable international reputation which spans all styles from aged tawny to vintage, and all points in between, demand threatens to outstrip supply. Ports are all made at the old Museu de Lagares in Vale de Mendiz, which has the only circular granite Lagares in the Douro. Niepoort's mission has always been to be a "niche player", to produce distinctive Ports and Douro wines, combining centuries-old tradition with innovation. This continues today with new vineyard projects to produce dry, natural wines in the Douro - Bairrada - Dão triangle. The importance attached to understanding soils, climates and grape varieties has led the current head of the business Dirk Niepoort down the path of Biodynamics, a practise that respects the "moods" of Nature, to find a balance between biodiversity and minimum intervention, and the wines really speak for themselves. Many of their vineyards now have organic certification, which is very much against the grain in contemporary Port making. After 150 years of doing things just a little differently, Niepoort are now highly respected for their delicious Ports and an increasing array of natural table wines.
