From the makers: ‘Old Man & the Bee is the annual tribute to our beautiful home orchard and the magnificent fruit it bestows upon us each year. The 2020 season was particularly rewarding. We dodged the early frosts and, with a lengthy warm summer followed by a mild autumn, we harvested well-rounded fruit with appealing acidity and mature tannins.’
The cider has the deep colour of golden syrup, with particularly captivating aromas of barbecued pineapple, combined with fresh sage. On the palate, the Dabinett apple contributes sweet nectarine and apricot notes, spiked with cloves. The Harry Masters Jersey adds tannin and notes of Mirabelle plum. The cider undergoes an eleven- month maturation in older ex-white Burgundy barrels which lends an additional touch of richness and spice.
All in all, much like the finest ciders, this is a succulent, juicy delight, and pairs excellently with really quite a wide range of foods. Try it with spice, where aromatic/ slightly sweet wine, would normally fit the bill. It also has a particular affinity for salt, cheese, and protein – croquettes or arancini, anyone?
