Pergole Torte 2019 Montevertine, 100% Sangiovese, barrel matured for 24 months, sweet red cherry, plum, spice, very expressive varietal wine. Montevertine is an estate near Radda, right in the heart of the Chianti Classico denomination. They have one of the highest altitude plots. They left the appellation in 1981 as Manetti (who presided over the wines at the time) sought to create wines that were a pure expression of Sangiovese. He did not want to blend it with other varieties as they require for the appellation law. The Pergole Torte vineyard is made up of the oldest vines on the estate. They ferment the wines in cement before racking them into large Slavonic oak barrels. Then they rack again into smaller French oak barrels for the final six months. They only produce Pergole Torte in exceptional years. It is generally medium to full bodied, elegant, packed with sweet red cherry, plum, with subtle cinnamon and mint characteristics. It has beautifully integrated tannins. Pergole Torte 2019 is Sangiovese at its most complex and sublime.

2016 is likely to go down as one of the great modern vintages in Tuscany and Le Pergole Torte will surely be one of the wines that defines it. I was lucky enough to taste it on a visit to the winery in Radda in August and was hugely impressed. Richly textural but with a refined elegance and precise structure, it will age for decades … if I can resist it that long. This is Sangiovese in its purest and most elevated form.
