Sassi Rosa Sangiovese, Tenuta Baroni Campanino, traditional old school Sangiovese from Umbria. High altititude vineyard, (700-900 metres above sea level on the slopes of Mount Subasio) with ‘Assisi stone’ soils made up of pink limestone (where the name Sassi Rosa comes from) are the corner stones of this characterful and great value Sangiovese. The fruit was hand harvested, naturally fermented in concrete vats and then matured in the vats for four years before release without fining, filtration and with just a touch of sulphur before bottling.
This amazing little wine has mature aromas of red cherry, plum, redcurrant, dried red flowers, Eucalyptus and leather. It is a mature and complex aroma which suggests a much more expensive wine. On the palate, the wine is a little more straight forward, mature red cherries mingle with medium acidity, hints of frest floor and a touch of leathery grip. Recognisably classic Sangiovese, not a wine for drinking on its own but with grilled meats, truffle, mushrooms, game etc, it would be delicious.
