Spring ingredients almost invariably call for wines that are fresh, fruit driven, aromatic. Whether it’s the pungent bite of wild garlic, the chlorophyll-laden intensity of asparagus, the earthy bitterness of globe artichokes, the freshly-dug-ground notes of new season potatoes, the succulence of barbecued lamb, the sharpness of rhubarb, or the first tangy berries; all of these flavours have similarities in their pairing themes.

With this in mind, our new mixed case features a selection of wines that are perfect for these key ingredients at this time of year.

2022 Jean Maupertuis ‘Pink Bulles’, Auvergne, France

Always fleeting in its appearance each year; the new vintage of the ultimate, ethereal, spring and summer sipper, is here. Gently sparkling Gamay, with a touch of residual sugar, balanced by a steel core of acidity. Expect bright strawberry fruit, delicate florals and bitter citrus. It will complete idyllic sunny afternoons, be a dream picnic accompaniment or a gorgeous aperitif. Perfect with snacks or canapes with fresh ricotta and wild garlic, or equally lovely at the end of a meal; with sweetened rhubarb, strawberries and cream or berry sorbet.

2022 Aphros Loureiro, Vinho Verde, Portugal

It’s very much the time to have a super-refreshing, crisp, dry white, on hand. Unfortunately, this sort of wine description can too often be a synonym for, well, something akin to, well, blandness…
In this case, fear not. Our chosen crisp, dry white, absolutely brims with a delightful lime-sherbet quality, notes of tangerine and floral notes, with bags of both style and substance. It’s also complex enough to enjoy with a range of food and would be perfect with light, bright preparations of various ingredients, such as fish tacos, ceviche, light salads and crudites.

2022 Andorfer ‘Handcrafted’ Kamptal, Austria

An excellent wine to have on hand at this time of year. It’s well-known that there are compounds in asparagus and globe artichokes which can make pairing tough (read more here), but the Gruner Veltliner grape has an ability, in my opinion, like no other, to glide over the grassy, bitter notes within asparagus in particular.

This is an unfined, unfiltered, ever-so-slightly spritzy, Gruner Veltliner. This new vintage is quite mouth-filling and viscous, but with a searingly fresh finish. Dense with stone-fruit, floral notes and peppery spice. A little wild in appearance, but super-refined in the glass!

2021 Franz Weninger ‘Ponzichter’, Sopron, Hungary

A gorgeous blend, low sulphites with notes of sour cherry and rhubarb- lots of fruit, but a tanged savoury edge. Super pure and so moreish.

Franz’s winemaking heritage dates back to the 19th century in Austria. Post-communism, his father acquired the vineyards in Hungary’s prime Kekfrankos region. Since 2006, they have been committed to biodynamics principles.

2022 Lapierre ‘Raisins Gaulois’, Beaujolais, France

Another iconic wine is back with a new vintage!

Made from 60-year-old vines on granite soils, it’s bright in colour, absolutely bursting with red cherry and strawberry aroma. Densely juicy, while being super-fresh on the palate. The lightest and silkiest of tannins and a pure joy to drink.
Please non-negotiably do serve chilled!
This would be reliably wonderful with oily fish, such as gently smoked trout, or chicken salad- ideally served outdoors!

2021 Ampeleia ‘Un Litro Rosso’, Tuscany, Italy (1 LITRE)

A whole litre of this absolutely gorgeous Mediterranean blend; featuring Alicante, Carignano, Mourvèdre, Sangiovese and Alicante Bouschet from the youngest vineyards close to the sea.

Super-fresh, with notes of black olive, red fruits and Mediterranean herbs. It is defined by its crunchy, energising palate and bright acidity.

Try with marinated spring lamb, salsa verde and a side of barbecued, new-season potatoes, for a perfect sunny combination.
