This box is a no budget expression of my (Director of Buon Vino) pure desire this Xmas. What I would love to drink on a special day and share with my family.

We always start with some fizz and despite the rise of English sparkling and the undeniable quality of some of them, I have always been a sucker for the classics and so we start with Champagne.  In this case, the mature and beautifully balanced Concordance ‘Sans Sulphite’ from Marie Courtin, a gorgeous wine which will get your feast off to a gorgeous start.

I have to include a wine from Ktima Ligas as they always overdeliver in terms of depth, complexity and interest.  One of the first wines they made was the Rodtis Barrique, only 900 bottles to ‘recover’ a batch of stainless steel Roditis which went a bit weird.  The result was so delicious, they have made it ever since and it is one my favourites, both rich yet also fresh and subtle, a lovely winter white.

Next a bottle of Rose which for me is simply the best you will find, from the now world famous Chateau le Puy.  This 2021 vintage in particular is superb, showing how Rose can be complex and gastronomic, we would potentially open this for a starter based on raw meat or fish, stunning.

Main course wines are very much of the moment.  You have never had Gamay like the Abstemes S’Abstenir 2018 from the Cahors region.  It is an incredible deep inky colour and such depth of aroma, it is intoxicating with dark mulberry fruits and flowers and spice.  The palate is round, soft, ‘sexy’ and perfect for pretty much any Christmas meat dishes, with Turkey, perfect.  The price is pretty special too being well under £30.  Next the king of Italian wines, the Amarone.  It wouldn’t normally be a choice for me, but this 2015 recently tasted at our in store tasting is magnificent.  Carlo Meroni manages to find such finesse in his wines despite the huge 17.5% abv, the wine is textured, elegant, subtle yet still quintessentially Amarone.  This would do as an amazing transition wine to finish the main course and start on some blue cheese.

Finally dessert and the simply heavenly Banyuls from Jean Francois Dieu in Banyuls.  A recent visit to this tiny artisanal domain in the hills above Banyuls served as renewed inspiration and a reminder that this guy, who moves slowly around his cellar in bare feet when showing you around makes some of the most emotive natural wines in the South if France.  The abv is again high as this is fortified sweet wine but by this time in the Xmas proceedings, you really wouldn’t notice!  The wine is simply delicious and with any desserts or cheese board, it will make you smile with pleasure.

That is it, happy slurping and Merry Christmas.  Rob, Director Buon Vino.
