The Director’s Choice Christmas Case 2025 – 6 bottles. This box is a no budget expression of my (Director of Buon Vino) pure desire this Xmas. What I love to drink on a special day and share with my family. Wine is such a personal thing and these bottles are ones which have a little special wine moment behind them or which I find just simply delicious and the winery is particularly inspiring.
Alessandra Divella makes almost perfect Sparkling wine, a marriage of freshness and richness which I utterly love. We drink a lot of fizz on Xmas day in our family, so a couple of bottles for sure, Nini 2020 is just gorgeous. I like full bodied Chablis. Last year we had the Clos Beru 2017 with some Lobster and Fresh Pasta which was incredible but this year, I have gone for 2022 Cotes aux Pretes, a little lighter but still complex, creamy and perfect for some Shellfish. We had a memorable stop over at Chateau de Beru several years ago, drank Chablis in the Court Yard of the 400 year old Chateau after a long swim in the 40 degree heat, very nice.
The two reds are not super charged wines, full but with a subtlety which makes them extra special. Chappaz is a winery we import ourselves and holds a special place in the Portfolio. The 2020 Pinot Charrat is drinking beautifully and with only a few bottles left, we need to drink another one. Richer and deeper is the exceptional 2018 Soula from Jordi Perez at Mailloles. Sadly, these wines will be no more with Jordi at the helm. He has decided to change jobs as the harvests are becoming so low, the vines are no longer commercially viable and Jordi has a family to support so has had to do something else. This is a sad refection of the cost of climate change. It is already hugely impacting some areas of wines production and the Roussillon is suffering a lot with lack of rain. The 18 Soula made from old vine Grenache is a sensual, emotional red, and we will drink it with some fine cheeses.
Finally for later on, probably on its own or just with some sweet treats, we will open a Grain Noble Chappaz. This is a blend of several local white grapes including Arvine and is a non vintage wine. For truly world class Dessert wine, you can’t really get much better. One of Marie Therese’s sweet wines got a 100 points from Parker last year, not that I value his opinions in any way but it does help to demonstrate the sheer brilliance of these wines from Marie-Therese Chappaz in Switzerland.
This is our Christmas drinking, and we can’t wait. We feel very fortunate to be able to enjoy wine like this at Christmas time.
