The Greek Case – Ligas/Sclavos – 6 Bottles, a superb selection of artisan Greek wines from two of the best natural wineries at opposite ends of the country, Sclavos from Kefalonia and Ligas from Pella on the mainland.
The case features three excellent, distinct, white wines. Firstly, the Sclavos ‘Efranor’ is a blend of Moschatela and Vostilidi, blended to create a lovely layered, expressive wine. Aromatic, yet crisp, fermentation and maturation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with the wine spending 7 months on fine lees for additional texture.
Vino di Sasso, also by Sclavos, is made from 100% of the grape native Kefalonian grape, Robola. A very elegant white- bright acidity and with a notable mineral streak, forged from the limestone soils in which these old vines grow. Find fruit basket notes, with lots of fresh citrus and petrol notes as the wine ages. The name Vino di Sasso means ‘Wine of the Stone’ and we find it particularly, aptly named.
Moving to Pella, to the wines of Ktima Ligas, our third white is made from 100% Assyrtiko. That certain Ligas savouriness is present, and this is a wine of richness, depth and complexity, while remaining thoroughly dry.
The fourth wine in our case is the renowned Ligas rose. Made from 100% Xinomavro, it’s full bodied, deep-fruited, wild, and herbaceous- a really unique and incredibly food-friendly example amongst rose wines.
‘Xiro’, by Ligas, is a delightful, fresher red offering- Xinomavro, mixed with a little of the white grape Roditis. Smoke, pine, herbs and even tomato are intermingled with dried and fresh red fruits, the wine suitable for chilling slightly on a sunny afternoon.
Finally is the robust red of our case, returning to Sclavos with their cuvee ‘Orgion’. Deep in colour and structured in character, it features tons of dark forest fruits and notes of vanilla and spice- a thoroughly appealing wine to serve with heartier meat dishes.
