Silvio Messana Rose Vino da Tavola, natural wine, 100% Sangiovese, medium bodied Rose, soft red fruits, notes of peach, amazing length of finish and sublime balance.  This Silvio Messana Rose has to be one of our Pinks of the year.  When we first tasted it, we were blown away by the style, depth of Sangiovese fruit character and the drinkability.  Strangely, Silvio professes to not really knowing much about making white and Rose wine, says he is more of a red man.  We think he is great at it.  The wine leaps out of the glass with fresh red fruits, sour cherries, soft creamy texture, peach, a little pepperiness.  With naturally made Rose, often low in sulphites, from a warmish climate, they can tend towards a bit too much volatile acidity.  Not here, clean as a whistle.  This is Rose full bodied enough for BBQs and such but light and classy enough to just drink.  Excellent price for the quality too.  Put on and your sunglasses and try a few bottles of this.

Silvio Messana with his wife Catalina took over the Montesecondo estate in 1999.

Originally created in the 1970's by his father who planted the vineyards, the grapes used to be sold in bulk by his mother who was running the estate after the death of her Silvio's father. Silvio soon started making wine and his very first vintage was produced in 2000. Surrounded by olive groves in Cerbaia val di Pesa. The 11.5 hectares of vineyards are planted on two types of soil: calcareous and clay soils with sandy areas which produce lush soft wines; and a limestone soil at 500m altitude, which produces crisper, leaner styles. Silvio mainly cultivates old vines (35 years old on average) of Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Everything is biodynamic, and they manage to obtain naturally low yields (30hl/ha) from the vigorous Sangiovese vines and great fruit that genuinely express their terroir.
