Vouvray La Dilettante, dry, biodynamic, lime, lychee, elegant. The dry Vouvray La Dilettante from Catherine and Pierre Breton is at the same time steely and soft, with notes of white flowers and chalk which mingle with blossom, minerals and notes of honey. It will reward ageing although in youth, its crisp freshness is a sheer delight with some goats cheese.

Catherine and Pierre Breton have been running their biodynamic estate just north of Restigné since 1997.

In total they own around 15 hectares around the area, also in Bourgeuil and Chinon. Their wines scream the up-most respect for the land. The viticulture is scrupulously natural, avoiding all chemical fertilisers and weedkillers, restricting yields to something like 40-45 hl/ha (although some cuvées are below 35 hl/ha) and harvest by hand. In the cellars, the grapes are treated according to terroir: gravelly soils going into stainless steel, whereas grapes from clay-limestone vineyards are fermented in old oak vats. Only indigenous yeasts are used, filtration avoided, and sulphur is severely restricted with most cuvées receiving just 10 mg/l at bottling. Their Cabernet Francs are excellent, but their dry vouvray is one of our favourite expressions of Chenin in the shop.

First had this wine as part of an incredible lunch at L’Enclume. It was so delicious we had to order another one. Very happy to have found it on this website.

Beautiful wine. Crunchy, honey, dates. Buy more and often.

I’m not one for wines that are too funky – I’m afraid I’m pretty conservative as yet. So it was a delight to discover this crisp and fresh white that carries itself lightly.

Drank this with some picky friends and we all loved it.

Yes, it’s got lime and apple as you might expect from a steel tank fermented chenin, but there’s a lot more. With a certain creamy/butteriness it’s almost like there was some malo, but BV assures us not. Perhaps some lees ageing? Then there is some honey (as another reviewer points out) and a bit of tropical fruit, before this great steely/gravelly finish ties it all together.

Everyone was like “this is the [stuff] where can I get me some of this?”

I really enjoyed this wine, so much so that I was thinking about it the day after we’d opened it, looking forward, with relish, to finishing it off with that evening’s dinner (no we didn’t drink it all in a single sitting!). It is certainly to be savoured, it is elegant, slightly nutty, but balanced with a depth of fruit which doesn’t ever veer into sweet or cloying territory, just a beautifully balanced, expressive flavour profile. Highly recommended.
