Details

Rasteau Cuvee Confiance Domaine de la Soumade, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, 50-100 year old vines, big, bold red wine for long ageing. This is a big bold wine of intense dark fruit and powerful brooding body. The Cuvee Confiance is 70% Grenache noir, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre from very low yields (25-35 hectolitres per hectare) and old vines, some 100 years old. It undergoes a long maceration and fermentation and then an 18 month maturation on fine lees in 4000 litre wooden 'foudre'. The wine is big, bold and dark with notes of dense forest fruits, cedar and spices. Well worth a few bottles for winter drinking.

Often quoted as the superstar of Rasteau, André Roméro produces five Cuvées of excellent red wine from his 26 hectare estate. There is something comforting about these hearty reds - not always perfect - but they nonetheless have a lovely, warming chunkiness about them which is always very enjoyable. At Soumard they practice agriculture “raisonée” in all of the vineyards, only treating the vines where absolutely necessary, in order to maximise the terroir (clay-limestone) characteristics of the wines and practise sustainable viticulture. They use organic compost which is only applied when soil deficiencies are revealed, following analysis of the soil and vine vegetation. When climatic conditions dictate they use organically permitted treatments (sulphur and copper) to protect the vines from mildew and oidium. Although not certified organic, their approach to viticulture is respectful of the land and the future sustainability of production and the environment. The wines are fined with egg whites where necessary. Perfect for an evening in with a steak and a DVD.
