Izadi is unashamedly international style Rioja, but its a good one. This little half bottle of red will do you nicely when you just fancy a couple of glasses with a Pork Chop. The vines are Rioja Alavesa, the high point of Rioja. Grapes are handpicked. Upon arrival at the winery, they are de-stemmed, softly crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 28ºC, with pumping over several times daily to extract the right amount of colour and ripe tannins. The wine undergoesa 28 day post ferment maceration before ageing in 225 litre oak barriques (73% American, 27% French) for 16 months, 20% of which are new. It spends a further two years in bottle before release, which qualifies it for Reserva status. Shiny ruby red in colour. Rich aromatic intensity and a nice balance of red fruit, liquorice and spices, with hints of smoke in the background. Soft fruit driven palate is not cloying and satisfyingly vinous.

The Izadi estate has been fronted by the Antons since 1987, and their estate is in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. Izadi itself means nature and they seek to respect nature whilst producing high quality wines with modern production techniques. They own 70 hectares, and use grapes from a further 100 or so. The grapes for this wine come from small parcels across the villages of Villabuena, Samaniego and Abalos.
